The Plot Twist That Turned Me into an Author (You Can Do It Too)

In 2001, my 20+ year tech career ended abruptly.

I was a casualty of the dot com crash.

For over 20 years my intuition guided my career and kept me ahead of the curve.

In 1980 I landed my first job in the computer industry long before most businesses used computers (long before fax machines).

I learned computer networking as it was being invented.

In 1989, I was employee number 40 at Cellular One as the cellular industry was just starting.

Cellular One used to bring in coaches (before they were called coaches) to help us work better as a team.

I fell in love with coaching and in 2001 I earned my coaching certification (a real certification, not your $37 certificate).

I spent most of 2002 building my coaching practice.

Marketing experts said a good way to get coaching clients is to speak at events.

With no track record of coaching, I struggled to get speaking engagements.

A good way to earn credibility was to write a book.

That's how I met Micah Schwader.

Instead of writing an entire book, I had the opportunity to co-author a book and learn the skill of writing from Micah.

This opportunity launched my writing career that launched my speaking career.

Since then I've co-authored three books and wrote three editions of Ultimate Guide to LinkedIn for Business and Ultimate Guide to Twitter for Business.

Next Tuesday at 10 AM Pacific time, Micah will be my guest and he'll show you how you can share your legacy.

A few weeks ago, I couldn't walk more than a few steps. I'd fall to the floor, curl up in fetal position, feeling like I was still falling. For 21 days, I was bedridden with extreme vertigo in both ears, unable to work, unable to concentrate for more than a few seconds, unable to do the simplest things I'd always taken for granted. It was one of the most challenging periods of my life. But something unexpected happened as I began to recover. This obstacle that completely derailed my life...

Last week, I caught myself snapping at my wife over something trivial, a misplaced glass. I felt embarrassed and said to myself, “This isn’t me!” But Chapter 24 of Modern Wisdom, Ancient Roots explained exactly what was going on and offered a path out of it. Dr. Rao reveals that anger and fear aren’t triggered by what’s happening around us. They come from resistance to our present moment. When life doesn’t match our expectations, we tense up, tighten our identity, and react, rather than...

I’ve lived through three career arcs so far and each one followed the same pattern: Master a skill. Become the expert. Then watch the world move on. In the 1980s, I was an award-winning field engineer in Silicon Valley. Back then, fixing computers meant using voltmeters and oscilloscopes. Real diagnostic work. You had to know what you were doing. But by the end of the decade? It was all board swapping. Technical mastery wasn’t needed anymore. So I pivoted. In the ’90s, I became a network...
